I remember the day quite clearly. I was sitting on the examination table at the Doctors office. I was there because I clearly was depressed. I would not let him write that in my file, and I refused to admit it. What happened over the course fo the next few months following that visit changed my life forever. The ways I changed my habits, my focus, my intention allowed me to create a happier, healthier life.
I wasn't aware until recently that I had depression for many years. I blamed it on all kinds of things. The weather in Ohio, the lack of sunshine, the fact that I was in pain, the crappy relationships, the direction my life was evolving. All of those things, just symptoms of not showing up and being present in my life and clearly not understanding that I actually do have choice. It was like a spiraling effect and I just kept slipping deeper.
What changed all that was the choice to be present and to change what wasn't working for me. I know that probably seems impossible for anyone that battles depression. The things I started changing slowly recreated my life. Little things like media fasts, giving up habits like smoking, meditation, exercise, eating healthier all contributed to my change.
I now have some pretty amazing tools that I use daily. I am still blown away when I realize how far I have come. Asking questions, including my body in my choices, making changes that are fun, are just a few things I use.
